Blog Platform Migration

Updated: Mar 5, 2019

The time has come to say goodbye to my Python-based blogging platform. In recent months I've found myself spending far more time debugging the actual platform than writing content, which is what this should really be all about. I'm in the process of migrating everything across to Wix now that they've got their development tools and API in a state that I feel like I can achieve 99% of what I want to do on their platform (at 2x the cost). You'll see the content migrate across over the next couple of weeks, then I'll be shutting down the old website and moving the domain over.

Building a website from scratch in Python taught me an awful lot about web development and Linux administration as well giving me the opportunity to go hands-on with a bunch of newer tools like Docker. It was super fun and I wouldn't change anything that I did, or the decisions I made along the way. That said, I'm really looking forward to being able to write more given I will no longer have the overhead of maintaining my own platform.

I wanted to include a plug for DigitalOcean, who were my cloud provider of choice for the last 2 years. For $5 a month I got access to a basic VM with enough grunt to serve my blog to the tens of followers it had accrued. Their plans are really competitive for individuals and I'd recommend their platform to anyone looking to stand up a small application (full disclosure - I do know a few of the excellent folks who work there).

Hope you all enjoy the new site. Feel free to send feedback (which should actually work properly once I'm done) or sign up and leave a comment.
